The park’s plains are decorated with red thorn acacias, desert dates, sausage trees, and fan palms. Two indigenous groups live within Kidepo’s boundaries: the Karamojong and the Ik people. The Karamojong, pastoralists similar to the Maasai, have settled into permanent villages while preserving their traditional customs. Visitors can tour their villages to gain insight into their lifestyle. The Ik, a hunter-gatherer community, reside on Mount Morungole and represent a rare, endangered tribe with fewer than 10,000 members.

Location: Situated in northeastern Uganda, near the borders of Sudan and Kenya. Spanning 1,442 sq. mi (557 sq. km), the park’s semi-arid savannah is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets.

Climate: With daytime temperatures reaching up to 40°C/104°F and cooling to 17°C/63°F at night, the park experiences a dry season from September to February. The wet season, with moderate rainfall, lasts from April to August.

Best Time to Visit: November to January offers a chance to witness some of Africa’s largest buffalo herds, especially near water sources during the dry season.
