Lake Bogoria National Reserve
Introducing Lake Bogoria with AK African Tours and Safaris
With its bubbling geysers, steaming hot springs, and the surreal landscape that may feel like another world, Lake Bogoria is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. Here, the breathtaking sight of flocks of flamingos—sometimes numbering in the millions—creates a mesmerizing contrast against the dramatic scenery. Lake Bogoria National Reserve offers an extraordinary
safari experience, providing a rare immersion into incredible birdlife. At its peak, the flamingos’ vibrant fuchsia plumage carpets the shoreline, creating a stunning spectacle.
Though the reserve may not be home to the largest African game, visitors can still enjoy sightings of impala, zebra, gazelle, warthog, buffalo, klipspringer, monkeys, baboons, and on rare occasions, leopard and cheetah. Around the lake, you might also spot greater kudu grazing alongside their flamingo neighbors.

Flamingoes and Other Avian Life
Lake Bogoria’s highly saline and alkaline waters, fueled by the region’s volcanic activity, are
home to thriving blue-green algae. This provides a rich food source for thousands of lesser
flamingoes, and sometimes greater flamingoes as well. With up to 135 species of birds in the
area, keen birdwatchers can also enjoy sightings of raptors like tawny eagles, buzzards,
goshawks, starling, hornbills, ibis, ostriches, and the majestic grey crowned crane.
Volcanic Springs and Geysers
The geothermal activity around Lake Bogoria is just as remarkable as the birdlife. The reserve
boasts more than 18 geysers, the most in Africa, with some shooting up to 5 meters (16 feet) in
a steaming display. Additionally, over 200 volcanic springs dot the landscape, where the water is
warm enough to boil eggs, offering visitors a truly unique experience.
