Explore the Untouched Wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park Ak Africa Tour & Safaris
Hidden in the rugged northeast of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Africa’s most remote and awe-inspiring safari destinations. Though off the beaten path, this park rewards the adventurous traveler with some of Uganda’s most striking landscapes and rare wildlife found nowhere else in the country.
Kidepo’s Unique Wildlife and Scenic Landscapes
Kidepo is home to species you won’t encounter in other parts of Uganda, such as cheetahs, aardwolves, bat-eared foxes, and caracal. With 75 mammal species, visitors can also enjoy sightings of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, jackals, leopards, wild dogs, and Nile crocodiles along the park’s two rivers, the Kidepo and Narus.
The wildlife here is relaxed, unfazed by the rare presence of visitors. Often, animals can be seen lounging close to the park accommodations, allowing for unique and intimate encounters whether on a game drive or from your lodge.
For bird lovers, Kidepo boasts 470 species, including the goshawk, little bee-eater, sandpiper, and ostrich.
Breathtaking Scenery
Kidepo’s vast savannahs are punctuated by striking mountain views, particularly the imposing 2,750 m (9,020 ft) Mount Morungole. The park’s plains are decorated with red thorn acacias, desert dates, sausage trees, and fan palms. The Borassus palm, a favorite of elephants and local communities alike, is especially iconic in this park’s landscape.
Culture and Community
Two indigenous groups live within Kidepo’s boundaries: the Karamojong and the Ik people. The Karamojong, pastoralists similar to the Maasai, have settled into permanent villages while preserving their traditional customs. Visitors can tour their villages to gain insight into their lifestyle. The Ik, a hunter-gatherer community, reside on Mount Morungole and represent a rare, endangered tribe with fewer than 10,000 members.
