Chimpanzee Tracking: The park is renowned for its chimpanzee population, with groups of up to 100 individuals. Track these fascinating creatures and witness their complex social structures up close.

Colobus Monkeys: Spot troops of Colobus monkeys, known for their long white fur, with groups sometimes numbering up to 300 individuals—a truly unique wildlife experience.

Other Primates: Encounter diverse primate species, including L'Hoest’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, Dent’s monkeys, vervet monkeys, and olive baboons along the park’s scenic trails.

Larger Wildlife: In addition to primates, keep an eye out for the serval cat, leopard, mongoose, and other mammals roaming the lush terrain.

Highlights and Activities

Canopy Walkway

Experience the forest from above on the Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walkway, East Africa’s first of its kind. Suspended 70 meters (229 feet) above the forest floor, this 160-meter (524-foot) walkway offers breathtaking views of the jungle, allowing you to enjoy a bird’s-eye (or monkey’s-eye!) perspective.

Guided Forest Trails

Nyungwe offers a network of color-coded walking trails, ranging from the 2 km (1.2 mi) Buhoro Trail to the 10 km (6.2 mi) Imbaraga Trail, each revealing unique aspects of the park’s ecosystems. Led by knowledgeable guides, these trails cater to all fitness levels.

Birdwatching

With over 300 bird species, Nyungwe is a paradise for birdwatchers. Look for iconic species such as the Rwenzori Turaco, sunbirds, African crowned eagles, hornbills, and the red-collared babbler.

Waterfall Trail

For a serene yet invigorating adventure, hike the Waterfall Trail. This less-traveled path leads to a secluded waterfall, offering a peaceful setting amid lush greenery.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

Nyungwe has a cool climate, with daytime temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and cooler nights averaging 11°C (51°F). The dry season, from June to September and mid-December to mid-February, offers the best conditions for trekking and wildlife sightings, as trails are less slippery.
