Satao Camp Tsavo East

Satao Camp: Tsavo East’s Premier Oasis

The defining feature of Satao Camp is its semi-circular layout. The entire camp is designed around a central, thriving waterhole.

Imagine waking up to the low rumble of an elephant just meters from your canvas wall. You unzip your tent, step onto your private veranda, and there it is: a massive “Red Elephant” of Tsavo, dusting itself against the backdrop of the rising sun.

This isn’t a scene from a documentary. This is a typical morning at Satao Camp.

Nestled in the heart of Tsavo East National Park, Satao Camp offers something rare in the modern world: a true immersion into the wild without sacrificing comfort. While other lodges build fences that separate you from nature, Satao embraces the bush.

Satao Camp sits in the heart of Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya’s most iconic wilderness areas. The camp is positioned around a natural waterhole that attracts wildlife throughout the day, giving guests uninterrupted views of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and a variety of plains game. Its remote setting ensures privacy, serenity, and a classic bush atmosphere far from the busier safari circuits.

The surrounding landscapes blend wide-open savannahs, seasonal rivers, doum palms, and the signature red soil of Tsavo, making it a dream destination for photographers and anyone seeking an authentic, unfiltered safari experience.

By Road
Satao Camp is easily accessible from both major coastal and inland hubs.

  • From Mombasa: Approximately 2.5–3.5 hours, depending on the Voi Gate route and traffic.

  • From Nairobi: Around 5–6 hours using the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway and entering through Manyani Gate or Buchuma Gate.

Road access is straightforward with clear signage into Tsavo East, and the drive itself offers beautiful scenery and occasional wildlife sightings along the park roads.

By Air
Charter flights can land at Satao Airstrip, located only a few minutes from the camp. This is the fastest and most direct way to arrive, especially for guests connecting from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport or the coastal airstrips in Diani, Malindi, and Mombasa.

Guests traveling from Nairobi or Mombasa can also use the SGR Madaraka Express. The nearest station is Voi, from where a guided transfer to the camp can be arranged. This option is smooth, scenic, and budget-friendly.
